Monday begins the annual fishing closure on the Upper Kenai River, to protect spawning rainbow trout.  The river reopens at 12:01 a.m. June 11 for red salmon, trout and Dolly Varden.

King salmon fishing is open below Skilak Lake with regulations imposed this year to protect larger spawning fish.  One king per day less than 36 inches can be kept. That change was intended to allow more fishing on a catch-and-release basis, while protecting the larger kings.  Early forecast is cautiously optimistic for a better early run of kings.

The forecast for the sockeye salmon run is down significantly from recent years.
