Today is the deadline to enter a new ice fishing tournament series that’s grabbing lots of attention from Valley and Anchorage anglers.  First day of fishing will be Saturday on Big Lake.

Ice fishing has always been a favorite winter pasttime for winter Alaskans who don’t want to wait for summer and also realize it’s both easier and a lot more fun than us fair weather fishermen realize.

The tournament, for two-fisherman teams, is benefitting Alaska Healing Hearts, the premier organization helping veterans after service through adventures outdoors.

Here’s more from the  SCO Facebook page:

The Still Cold Open Ice Fishing Series held on Big Lake is Alaska’s premier ice fishing tournament. Our mission is to promote ice fishing excellence through education, participation, and competition. This year, the SCO tournament series is proud to announce that we are teaming with Alaska Healing Hearts/Hardwater Warriors so that we can give back to our nations hero’s and continue to grow our participation numbers in the veteran/active duty community.

Alaska’s Healing Hearts is a national organization offering year-round outdoor recreational opportunities for America’s brave wounded warriors and their families. Rehabilitation activities include fishing, hunting, skiing, rodeo, dog sledding tours and various other outdoor pursuits. They work to provide new and challenging options and experiences in an effort to contribute to social reintegration necessary for our nation’s heroes. They strive to reach beyond the clinical rehabilitation offered to injured military personnel and provide hope for warriors to continue to live active and productive lives.
