SUMMARY:5th Annual Alaska Yak Classic (Kayak Halibut Derby)
DESCRIPTION:Fishing is at Whisky Gulch for kayak anglers will and able to tackle Cook Inlet Halibut. \nThe Tournament starts at daylight or in this case 4:45am.\nThe tournament will end at 6pm. \nThe winner will be the single largest halibut by weight.  If for some reason we don’t have a scale large enough\, we will go by length. \nThe timing means you get to hit the ULTRA low minus tide (minus 5.2) which is at 9:54am and if you don’t catch fish by then\, you can also hit the high tide at 4pm though you will have to stay closer to the launch. \nWith the bigger tides\, the current will change fairly quickly after the shore high tide. \nI wil be contributing a trophy and some fishing gear. \nAaron of 907 kayakers (https://www.facebook.com/907kayakers/) has graciously donated a $100 gift certificate from Sportsman’s warehouse. \nKen Wake from Prepper’s Pack (https://www.facebook.com/prepperspack.08/)has said he would donate items as well. \nIf anyone would like to contribute or know someone who will\, let me know.  I will make sure they get mentioned.  I will also keep updating this thread with any new information or prizes. \nThe main focus is just a get together and bragging rights. \nShare this:FacebookX

SUMMARY:Campbell Creek Youth-Only King Salmon Weekend
DESCRIPTION:The 2017 Youth-Only Fishery for king salmon on Campbell Creek in Anchorage will take place from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday\, June 24 and Sunday\, June 25. \nAnglers who are 15 years of age and younger will have a chance to fish for king salmon on Campbell Creek between Dimond Boulevard and the Old Seward Highway. The Youth-Only Fishery was established by the Alaska State Legislature and implemented by the Alaska Board of Fisheries to provide a special opportunity for young people to get out and go fishing. Youth anglers do not need a sport fishing license or king salmon stamp but do need a Harvest Record Card. Any king salmon harvested must be recorded immediately on the Harvest Record Card. While adults can assist youth anglers in landing a fish\, this section of Campbell Creek is closed to all fishing\, including catch-and-release\, for anglers 16 and older during this time. As with all fisheries in Alaska\, the fish belongs to the angler that sets the hook. \nAlaska Department of Fish and Game staff and volunteers will be at the Taku-Campbell Lake parking lot off of 76th and King Street to help young anglers\, from approximately 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.on Saturday\, June 24. Fishing rods will also be available for kids to check out and use on a first come basis during this timeframe. \nThe harvest limits for king salmon 20 inches or greater is one per day\, and one in possession. These kings count toward the regional annual limit of five king salmon\, 20 inches or longer. The harvest limit for king salmon less than 20 inches is five per day\, and five in possession. Campbell Creek is closed to fishing for other species of salmon at this time. Bait is allowed during this time. Snagging is not allowed. \nKids may also find rainbow trout and Dolly Varden in the creek. The limits for rainbow trout and Dolly Varden in Campbell Creek are five per day and five in possession for each species. Boats will line up in the water in order of registration and will be released once a boat check has occurred. It will not be a shotgun start. Kayaks will be released first. SUMMARY:Fisheries board emergency Copper River meeting
DESCRIPTION:Alaska Board of Fisheries will expand its special meeting on Wednesday\, May 17  to review an emergency petition by the Fairbanks Fish and Game Advisory Committee to limit commercial fishing for the dismal forecast of Copper River king salmon. \n \nArrival of the first Copper River kings to market was once a historic photo opp\, as in this 2012 event at Anchorage’s Bridge Restaurant. Poor runs may mean neither sport nor commercial fishing for Copper River fish this year. \n\nThe meeting starts at 1 p.m. and will be streamed online live. \nThis is an expanded agenda from the board’s special meeting on the Bering Sea Tanner Crab Harvest Strategy\, to be held May 17-18 \nAt the very beginning of the meeting will be a review of the emergency petition requesting the board consider a number of measures to limit the harvest of king salmon in the Prince William Sound commercial salmon fishery. SUMMARY:McNeil River State Game Sanctuary 50th Anniversary Celebration
DESCRIPTION:This year commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Alaska State Legislature’s designation of McNeil River as a State Game Sanctuary in 1967.  It was an incredible thing for the State of Alaska to do in designating this protected area for the world’s largest congregation of brown bears gathering to feed on spawning Pacific salmon during the summer months.  Now\, 50 years later\, McNeil River has changed very little and the bears still “come first.”  McNeil has been called “an icon for the protection of wild places\, and above all a living monument to the Alaskan brown bear.”  People from Alaska\, and around the country and the world\, who visit the sanctuary have incomparable wildlife experiences there every summer.\nCome celebrate the 50th anniversary of McNeil and 50 years of brown bear conservation with stories and talks from some of the people who have spent time on the ground there.  Tom Walker (photographer and co-author of RIVER OF BEARS)\, Doug Chadwick (biologist and author)\, Larry Aumiller (McNeil’s 30-year manager)\, Jeff Fair (author of IN WILD TRUST\, the latest book about McNeil River)\, Clem Tillion (the legislator who helped designate McNeil in 1967)\, and others.  It should be a great night for wildlife stories and Alaskan brown bears.\n\nBear Tooth Theatre\nAnchorage\, AK\n$10 General Admission\nThursday\, May 11\n7:30 p.m.\n\nProceeds to benefit Friends of McNeil River (FOMR).\n\n\nStarting Tuesday\, April 25 all tickets\, including reserved ticket booths\, will go on sale online and at the Bear Tooth Ticket office.\n\nShare this:FacebookX
